The Earthquake That Shook The Heavens (01/11/2008)

released: Jan 11, 2008

description: A Jeep rolls through a barren landscape, with an army transport vehicle in hot pursuit. A devastated down pulls into view; at the town's small hospital, Dr. Lafferty is tending to sick children while mourning the loss of his own children. The Jeep makes its way into the town, and stops in front of the hospital. Steve leans over from the drivers seat to his friend Harry, who is clearly very badly injured. He tells Harry that he won't die -- they have gotten the medicine to the children, and he is a hero.

Six months before this day, the president was sitting comfortably in the Oval Office when he was interrupted by the Secretary of Agriculture. There are bizarre seismology readings occurring, but the president could not be bothered. As he waved the Secretary off, plates collided and a huge earthquake ensued, creating a huge hole in the middle of Nebraska. Simultaneously, the mysterious Eastern Europeans from the army transport vehicle took over the United States seismology laboratories for their own evil purposes. Once they gained control, they revealed their true form -- giant screeching demons.

The town of Wellville was torn apart by the earthquake -- of the survivors, it was mostly the children that are badly injured. Dr. Lafferty tried to help everyone he can, despite his own despair. Steve thought that someone should go get some more supplies, and Harry volunteered to join him on the journey, mostly to prove to his ex-wife Mary that he is doing something worthwhile. The two men set out in the Jeep.

Steve and Harry came across a hospital in Omaha, and went in together to see what supplies they could bring back to the children. There, they encountered a doctor, who began to ask for help, but was quickly attacked by a screeching demon. The two men fought off the demon, and grabbed all the supplies they could before hastily getting out of there.

The demons learned of the men's killing of their colleague, as well as their collection of medical supplies, and set off after them. As they drove, Ivan was maimed by the acidic claws of Petra. In his anger, he thew him from the army transport vehicle and took over command of the demon unit. The army transport vehicle stayed in close pursuit of the Jeep -- until the road ended suddenly at a cliff.

The two men jumped the cliff and landed outside of the Jeep. Steve was injured, and Harry dressed the wounds as best as he could. The demons managed to get down to the bottom of the mountain as well, and the two men peeled off. They saw in the rear view, however, the demons preparing to launch a rocket at their Jeep. Harry saw no other option, and threw himself between the Jeep and the rocket, catching it, and saving the car.

Steve pulled Harry back into the Jeep and continued to race towards Wellville, where Dr. Lafferty had just learned his own twins were dead. Dr. Lafferty wandered out to the makeshift graveyard to say good-bye to his children, and to promise to help those he could. He gathered up the children that he could and put them in hospital beds, tending to them as best he can. Just then, the Jeep pulled back into town.

Harry is badly injured, and Steve promises him that he will make it through, but his friend dies in his arms. Dr. Lafferty and his nurse rush out to meet the Jeep, and Steve introduces Harry as a hero who died to get the medical supplies. Dr. Lafferty and the nurse are appreciative, and try to take the supplies in immediately -- but find another demon who has stowed away in the Jeep. Steve makes quick work of the demon, using Harry's intestines as a noose.

Dr. Lafferty soon cures all the children using both the medical supplies and the acid from the demons to melt off tumors. Steve honors his friend by naming most landmarks in Wellville after Harry. And from the open pit that was once Nebraska climbs the President -- on the back of a demon he has tamed with M&M's. The President takes the message of partnership to all the survivors, and manages to build a new America on the backs of the demons.
