description: Tanned bodies fill the boardwalk and beach area of a bustling shore town. In the lifeguard shack, Maximus revels in the glory of being head lifeguard to Sherry and Gus. His mousy girlfriend Trudie shows up with a burger for him just in time to see him valiantly rescue a drowning boy, Lucas. As the crowd gathers around him in celebration, Trudie is called back to her job at the Burger Shack.

Mr. Roberts, Trudie's boss, chastises her for running late, as the orders have been murder at the Burger Shack. Trudie resumes flipping burgers, and when her co-workers inquire about her sad expression, she confesses that she feels she and Maximus and growing apart. Gertrude and Maureen recommend a makeover, but Trudie refuses, stating she likes who she is.

That night, as Maximus waits for Trudie to get off of her shift, he is approached by Gus. Gus states that he is tired of Maximus excelling at everything and challenges him to a fight. As the two lifeguards circle each other, cries for help are heard – Lucas is once again drowning. Both men dive into the ocean, competing for the save as the victim's sister frantically watches from the beach. Maximus succeeds in saving Lucas, and his sister throws herself at him in gratitude. Trudie sees the entire thing from high atop a hill, and runs into the night, crying.

Gus also runs off, sobbing, and the two run directly into each other. Discovering their mutual current hatred for Maximus, they decide the best course of action is for the two of them to get together. Maximus watches this exchange from the top of the hill, and leaves, dejected.

The next morning, Maximus confesses to Sherry that he is brokenhearted by Trudie getting together with Gus. He decides the only thing he can do in revenge is to date Lucas's sister. Meanwhile, Trudie returns to the Burger Shack and asks her co-workers if the makeover offer still stands. The two girls set to work immediately, and soon, Trudie is blonde and tan and walking down the boardwalk with a crowd of admirers behind her.

She finds Maximus on the beach with Lucas and his sister Rachel. Gus sees her approach and runs up to join the group. Maximus and Trudie claim to be happy without the other, but Maximus notes Trudie's makeover and tells her she never had to change. He presents her with a book, Dan Brown's Angels and Demons and some gum he bought for her, and begs her not to go back to the Burger Shack. Trudie tries to hold her ground, but Maximus appeals to her again, and Trudie finds herself giving in. The two finally reconcile and hold each other as they watch Gus save Lucas from drowning yet again.
