Body Work Never Fails (09/07/2007)

released: Sep 07, 2007

description: Physical and metaphorical sparks fly as Nick Prescott works on the car of Janie Stevens. Unfortunately, the next day Nick is informed by Officer Dick Rutkiss that Janie was killed in a terrible car accident that involved her driver's side door imploding. Nick is hauled into the station for questioning, where he remembers Janie having three separate incidents of car trouble -- and her confiding to him that someone was trying to kill her.

Nick returns to his garage, where his assistant Spanky informs him that a man stopped by asking for him. The man left a matchbook for Tony Serpent's bar and said Nick would know what it mean. Nick goes to Tony Serpent's where he meets Tony, Janie's cousin, and Sharon, Janie's sister. They ask if Janie left anything for them. Nick remembers an audio tape that was given to him for safekeeping. Tony demands Nick turn it over, and as soon as he does, Tony attempts to kill him with a battle ax. Nick is saved by Dick Rutkiss and his partner, Dayton Spanning, bursting into the bar and taking Tony out. They return Nick to the police station once again.

At the station, Nick listens to the tape Janie left. Her message states that she knows exactly who killed her, and it is someone close to Nick. Just as she is about to reveal who it is, one of the officers accidentally shoots the machine. Nick is left wondering as he heads back out into the night.

On an abandoned but winding road home, Nick finds himself being tailed by a mysterious car. The car tries to drive him off the road, and Nick gets out of his own vehicle and demands to know what the driver wants. The mysterious figure, who is clearly Dick Rutkiss, gives a cryptic message basically revolving around Nick's physical perfection.

Nick finally makes it home to his apartment, where he finds Spanky waiting for him. As he gets Spanky a Coke and a glass of juice, the two talk, and Spanky quickly reveals that she has a gun. Although the police, Sharon, and a pizza delivery man all gather outside to help, Spanky will not allow anyone else into the apartment. The two struggle and a shot is fired-- and Janie stands over the two with a smoking gun. Janie asks her half-sister why she tried so desperately to kill her, and Spanky confesses jealousy. Spanky wanted Nick to be her own territory. As the two sisters continue to argue, Nick climbs out onto his fire escape and watches all the people leave. Alone, he throws the gun he wrestled from Spanky into the air -- and one final shot rings out.
