Baby Cakes Watson (09/04/2007)

released: Sep 04, 2007

description: A Catholic school girl breaks away from her classmates to sneak a cigarette before heading home. She makes her way through the hobos on the front steps up to the apartment she shares with her grandfather. Grandpa notices that she has tried to hide that she has been wearing makeup, and banishes her to her room. Baby Cakes Watson begrudgingly goes.

That night, Jimmy Walker sneaks up the apple tree and entices her to go for a ride in his Corvette. Baby Cakes finally succumbs to his charms, and they race through back roads, smoking and chewing gum. The ride is harmless fun – until they hit an innocent deer, killing it instantly. Baby Cakes is horrified at the damage they have caused. The police turn her over to her grandfather's car and take Jimmy off to jail.

Baby Cakes is riddled with guilt, and feels even worse when her grandfather reminds her of how her parents died – they were joyriding with friends, enjoying soda and other various sweets, when they drive over a cliff and were impaled on jagged rocks. Baby Cakes swears off all the sinful activities, and, true to her new caste lifestyle, ends up in a convent fifteen years later.

Baby Cakes is serving dinner in the food pantry when she sees a familiar face on line – Jimmy Walker. He tells her that he was just released from jail, and never forgot her in all those years. That night, Baby Cakes is haunted by nightmares involving Jimmy, bubble gum, and the deer they hit. She wakes in a terror to find a concerned Father Reilly standing over her bed. The priest advises that perhaps if Baby Cakes has not found what she is looking for in the church, she may need to move on. Baby Cakes agrees, and does so the next morning.

As Baby Cakes wanders through the city, trying to find her true place, she comes across Jimmy Walker again. Jimmy is getting ready to leave for Phoenix, where he hopes to find employment as a dock worker. After some hesitation, Baby Cakes goes with him.

Ten years pass, and Baby Cakes and Jimmy are living with their two children in a boat in the desert. Although she puts up a good facade, Baby Cakes is miserably in their lifestyle of poor morals. She sneaks into the desert by herself and renders a drawing of Jesus. When her children ignore her calls to join her, she laments that no one listens. The Jesus in the sand responds that he does, and comes to life before her eyes. He tells Baby Cakes that he has been with her as she has struggled to fit herself into various molds throughout her life, although often unnoticed by her. He wonders if perhaps Baby Cakes can find what she is truly looking for by allowing the different things she believes to co-exist.

Baby Cakes is hauled up and into the boat, where she greets her family with a new outlook. She lets them know that things are going to change, but that doesn't necessarily have to be a huge deal. Her family agrees, and from the clouds, Jesus, Grandpa, and the deer smile down on them.
