My Favorite Boss (Who is a Paraplegic) (07/03/2007)

released: Jul 03, 2007

description: Charles Bentley runs his architectural firm with a generous grace,
hoping that his employees will overlook his confinement to a
wheelchair. Everyone is constantly aware of his handicap though as
the architects treat him as though he is helpless. Charles finds
himself unable to forget the vicious mugging that severed his spine,
or to stop grieving for the active lifestyle he had before his
accident. He recommits himself to winning over his employees: he asks
Jimmy and several other architects to stop designing a new stadium and
instead accompany him to the bar. At the bar, he faces more judgement
and ridicule from strangers, and more grief as the architects plan
what activities they will do at the firm's insensitively-planned field
day.

The day of company outing, Bentley again refuses to allow himself to
be treated differently and volunteers for the dunk tank. All of his
employees, however, will not try to dunk a paraplegic and instead go
to run the trail. Bentley is alone and trapped in the dunk tank as
the skies open and rain begins to fall. When he finally returns to
his handicap-equipped home, Bentley lashes out and trashes his home,
swearing that he will no longer be the nice pushover boss if no one
will respect him.

The next day, Bentley enters the office and promptly informs all the
architects that they are fired. He further tells them they will all
be replaced with architects with differing abilities. As the
applicants file in to take their jobs, the architects plead with
Bentley to reconsider, but he will not budge. Later that night, they
all meet at Jimmy's apartment to discuss their situation. They decide
that rather than find new jobs, they should treat Bentley as
physically regularly as possible. They return to the office the next
day and invite him out for an array of sporting activities.

As the architects and Bentley share beers at the end of their day,
Bentley suddenly receives an emergency call from the head of the
professional hockey commission saying that they want to see the arena
designs first thing in the morning. Bentley panics, as the new
architects have been moving at a different rate than his regular
employees. He enlists all his old workers to come back to the firm,
and fires the new architects with differing abilities. The old
architects ask that he let them stay on, and together, all the
architects build a mock of a stadium that allows easy access for all
people.

The heads of all St. Louis sports teams are impressed, and the Bentley
stadium even brings peace to the far reaches of the world. More
importantly though, Bentley and all the architects have developed a
new extended family that accepts them all just as they are.
