The Naked Monkey (06/19/2007)

released: Jun 19, 2007

description: The Cleveland fashion scene is rocked when a bomb is set off in the middle of a fashion show, killing fifteen male models and countless photographers and designers. A shadowy figure watches from a car and smiles. At the Cleveland police station, Captain O'Reilly puts straight-laced Crenshaw on the case, but informs him he'll be working with a partner – the slovenly but streetwise John Smith. The two take a cab to the crime scene to gather evidence.

Amidst the destruction, they meet Frederica von Schtupel, Cleveland's pre-eminent fashion designer. She begs them to find who killed all her models, and offers her help if they need it. She further tells them that she will be holding a benefit fashion show the next night.

Back at the station, as the two detectives examine what they have collected, Captain O'Reilly informs them that for purposes of this investigation, a studio apartment has been rented for them. Crenshaw and Smith retire to their temporary home, where they discover the extent of their differences. As they settle back to back in their shared Murphy bed, a shadowy figure hides in the crawl space below them, setting the timer on a bomb. The clock draws closer and closer to zero, but fortunately, a young woman with car problems knocks on the door. Jill draws the two detectives out of the apartment just in time – the building promptly explodes behind them. Jill tells the two they can stay at her dorm room at the fashion institute.

Meanwhile, in the Naked Monkey's hideout, her assistant informs her that the latest explosion occurred but was not successful – Crenshaw and Smith got away. The Naked Moneky asks where they are now, and orders her assistant to plant a new bomb there.

Jill leads Crenshaw and Smith to her dorm room, only to have Smith immediately march back out. He instead goes to Frederica von Schtugel's mansion. Frederica invites him to stay with her, and the two soon take advantage of her pink pillow room. Meanwhile, in Jill's dorm room, she and Crenshaw let the hours tick by with tension building. Finally, just as the two lean in to each other, Smith bursts back into the room. He informs them that he has spent the night with von Schtugel, where he had access to her books. He thinks it may be worth investigating the von Schtugel warehouse. .

As they enter the warehouse, they notice immediately that it is completely empty. They fail to notice the Naked Monkey lurking in the shadows. Crenshaw spots an invitation in the trash, and as he reads it, a cage falls over him. A similar cage traps Smith, and the Naked Monkey emerges. Jill immediately recognizes her as Vernique, a failed fashion designer who was responsible for the deaths of many male models years ago. Vernique expresses her frustration at being unable to design for men and how this holds her back in the fashion world. She informs the men that there is a bomb planted in the warehouse and another at the fashion show before running out with Jill over her shoulder.

Smith creates a laser with a ring he stole off of Jill's finger and his belt buckle. He cuts them free of the cages, and the two jump into his '72 Thunderbird and rush to the fashion show. Vernique has smuggled Jill into the top row of the balcony, and her assistant has planted bombs all down the catwalk. A male model is revealed to be Crenshaw in disguise, and he sets to work dismantling all the bombs. Smith, meanwhile, pops up behind Vernique and Jill with gun drawn, only to find himself held at gunpoint by the Naked Monkey's assistant – Frederica von Schtupel. As Crenshaw rushes up the stairs, a gunshot is heard, and he finds Smith shot in the balcony. Crenshaw pulls his gun on von Schtupel, and a standoff commences. With the urging of von Schtupel, Crenshaw admits his feelings for Jill, and a not-actually-dead Smith takes advantage of the distraction to shoot and kill Vernique.

Days later in the hospital, Smith tells von Schtupel she will keep "apologizing" once for every exit wound. Outside in the park, Crenshaw and Jill share a picnic on a bench. The two lean in once again, but this time are interrupted by Smith's thrown beer can and boisterous laugh.
