The Last Ho of the Sphinx (04/17/2007)
released: Apr 17, 2007
description: Deep in the back rooms of the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas, a deal is being finalized. Randall and Trixie Cunningham are buying the Jade Ho of the Sphinx. The sha making the deal with them gives a final warning, telling the story of the pharaoh who owned the Ho going mad with power. The Cunninghams scoff at the story, and although their ever-present insurance agent advises against it, purchase the Ho.
In the casino, Jack Logan slumps over the blackjack table. It is clear by his appearance and by the hands he is dealt that he is in a deep streak of bad luck. He informs the other players that he was once one of the nation's top Egyptologists. No one is impressed, so Jack goes to his shabby hotel room to drown his sorrows in booze and cheap hookers. Once he is finished with his distractions, Jack reflects on his past, specifically the time he spent with Karen Stone, the only one who seemed to appreciate his knowledge of Egypt. A newspaper is thrown against the door, and when Jack checks the headlines, he sees to his horror that the Jade Ho of the Sphinx is at the Luxor. He rushes off to warn them.
The Cunninghams are already enjoying substantial wealth in Randall's office despite the insurance agent's continued warnings. Jack barges in and demands they immediately destroy the Jade Ho. Randall says they are aware of the curse, and see no evidence of it, as business is booming. Since they will not heed his advice, Jack decides to destroy the Ho on his own. Randall yells after him that he won't get far - the Ho is heavily guarded. Jack discovers this on his own, as he is tossed into the alley by a huge guard - right into the path of Karen Stone.
The two catch up as they wander around Vegas - she can't find work, so she is reduced to dancing; he tells her of the cursed Ho. She says she will do whatever she can to help him, but is almost immediately hypnotized by the bounty of Ho merchandise offered at the casino. An enormous greed overcomes her, and Jack talks her out of it with happy memories. She sees the urgency of the situation, and the two run to the Luxor to destroy the Ho.
At the casino, the changes are dramatic. The clientele have turned into Egyptian zombies, with pharaoh headdresses and a thirst for blood. The people are all either viciously fighting or involved in the building of a pyramid. Jack and Karen disguise themselves as slaves and sneak into the hotel. They make their way through the winding hallways of the hotel/casino, and suddenly find themselves chased by alligators. They escape the alligators by jumping over an open elevator shaft - alligators have poor jumping abilities - when they are attacked by scarab beetles. Jack fights them off with the aid of a fire extinguisher. Past these traps, they find themselves at Randall Cunningham's office door, which is emitting a jade glow.
They enter the office and find it has been transformed into an Egyptian throne room. They are greeted by the mummified corpses of Trixie and the insurance agent - Randall has killed his wife and constant advisor because of his overwhelming greed. As they walk further into the throne room, they are greeted by Randall himself - who has become hulking and huge with the power of the Ho. He refuses to turn it over to them. Karen uses Jack's technique of invoking happy memories on Randall. It seems to be working, and allows Jack to sneak past him and steal the Ho. He loudly announces he has it, and the two bolt out of the office - only to discover Randall has also acquired the ability to teleport.
A chase ensues through the hallways until Randall captures Karen with the aid of his giant boa constrictor. He demands the return of the Ho, or he will order Karen's death. Jack strikes the snake with the Ho, and it releases Karen. Randall lunges at Jack and the two struggle over the Ho, until Jack pushes Randall down the elevator shaft to his demise.
The casino and all the people in it immediately return to their normal state. Karen asks Jack if he can bear to part with an ancient relic. As they lock the Ho in its proper place in a tome in Egypt, Jack tells her that he has something else to make his life worthwhile now - Karen. Together, they two deliver lectures on their experience while deep below the sands of Egypt, unbeknownst to everyone, the Ho's eyes burn bright green.
