The Curious Scent (03/27/2007)

released: Mar 27, 2007

description: A sparrow flies through an idyllic town going about its quaint business until it reaches a factory on the outskirts. Scientists bustle around a laboratory inside. Janet Armstrong is engrossed in her work when her supervisor Greg and her archnemesis Bill approach. Greg demands some results on the rabies vaccine she has been working on. Bill scoffs -- he finds his work on the SARS/Bird flu vaccine to be much more important than rabies.

Susan then runs in and tells Janet she has to talk to her immediately. Susan confesses that she took some of Janet's vaccine and sprayed it on herself like a perfume. Where ever she went that night, men swooned over her, fought for her attention and gave her money. Susan advises her friend to try some for herself -- after all, Janet does not receive the most positive attention from men. Neither woman notices the rats that Janet has tested her vaccine on -- the male rats are consuming the female, their eyes flashing red.

Later that night, Janet sneaks into the lab and applies some of the vaccine to her wrists and neck. She immediately goes out on the town, where men fall over themselves before her and woodland creatures flock to her feet. The next morning, she wakes up disoriented and with four gentlemen in her apartment.

She runs to work and informs Susan of what happened. Susan insists that this has to be marketed; Janet can make a killing. Greg and Bill then enter, however, and inform Janet that a prominent scientist, Mr. Foxwell, will be in that day to inspect her progress on the rabies vaccine. Janet panics -- the vaccine is completely gone. She frantically makes another batch and finishes just as Greg and Bill bring in Mr. Foxwell. None of the men notice that Janet has taken a sip of the vaccine.

As Janet explains her work, Mr. Foxwell falls victim to the effects of Janet's scent. He tells her that she has the support of his company, and then tries to lure Janet to his own laboratory. Greg shows Mr. Foxwell out, which gives Bill ample opportunity to feel the same effects of the vaccine. He attempts to seduce Janet; Janet, who confesses a crush on Bill despite his competitive attitude, seizes the opportunity. Neither of them notice the beaker of vaccine has fallen into the drain, which leads to the town's water supply. Or that the test rats are dead.

The vaccine quickly wears off of Bill, although it spreads quickly throughout the town. Janet, meanwhile, has begun to feel ill. Greg bursts in to tell them of the chaos going on in town, and they discover the broken beaker in the sink. They realize they must act immediately to save the town, and Bill speculates that his SARS/Bird flu vaccine may just be the thing that will do it. The three frantically produce as much as they can and set out with spray packs on their backs.

The three make great progress through most of the town. They are just finishing when Janet sees Susan running down an alley. She follows her; Greg follows Janet. At the end of the alley, they are met with the entire women's synchronized swimming team. The two scientists discover they are out of vaccine. Greg succumbs to the swimmers, and Janet runs to find Bill, who also falls prey to the same fate. Janet worries all is lost, and Susan taunts her, reminding her that this all started with her. This makes Janet realize that Susan is the source, and knows what she must do. She snaps her friend's neck. As everyone returns to normal, Janet kneels beside her friend and apologizes.

The next morning, Janet wakes up in her apartment. As she is bemoaning her continued lonely state, as well as the murder of her only friend, Bill walks out of her kitchen. Janet is incredulous but joyful, and does not notice as Bill's eyes flash red.
