Death Warmed Over (09/25/2007)

released: Sep 25, 2007

description: As a bustling restaurant kitchen prepares the traditional cakes for La Día de las Muertas, a waitress carries an order out to a table. She discovers everyone in the restaurant is dead. The police arrive at the scene and assess that it follows the same pattern as three other mass murders in the city. Detective Amberson takes the opportunity to comfort the waitress, Rhonda Weathers, and to get her phone number.

The lab reports confirm that the deaths are a result of a combination of bleach and rat poison – just like at the other three restaurants. As Detective Amberson receives this news, he is interrupted by a call from Rhonda – her apartment has been ransacked. The detective rushes over there, but can find no trace of the perpetrator. Unbeknownst to the detective and Rhonda, a cloaked figure watches from across the way.

The detective receives another call, this time informing him that the surviving waitress from the first restaurant has been murdered. Amberson rushes to the home of Lois Reinhold, surveys the scene, and orders plainclothes watching the other three waitresses' homes. As he and Officer Patterson drive back towards Rhonda's, however, they get word that waitresses two and three have been found dead as well.

The officers arrive at Rhonda's apartment just in time to see a tiny figure openly walk past the plainclothes guarding the door. Amberson chastises them for not stopping her, and then chases the figure through the building. He bursts into Rhonda's apartment, searches it, and finds the figure has escaped. He tells Rhonda they will be moving her to a safe house immediately. Rhonda asks if she can shower first to calm her nerves. The detective allows it, but only with the understanding that he will be keeping guard. As steam fills the bathroom, Amberson and Rhonda are no longer able to control their feelings and give in to temptation.

Back at the police station, the lab has more autopsy results – and also a clean print. Amberson takes it down to Eustice, who runs a scan and comes up with a match on Rosa Cervantes, a scorned former contestant on Top Chef. To his horror, Amberson finds his colleagues being tempted by suspicious baked goods – and then receives a call from Rhonda thanking him for the food, which is suddenly cut off. Amberson and Patterson immediately run to the safe house.

Amberson rushes into the safe house to find Rhonda bound and held at gunpoint by Rosa Cervantes. Rosa reiterates her grudge against all those who eat food not prepared by Rosa herself, and informs the detective that he and Rhonda will now pay the price. Amberson succeeds in knocking the guns from her hands, and a fist fight ensues, finally culminating in Rhonda shooting Rosa. As Amberson and Rhonda comfort each other, Rosa gets back on her feet, only to be shot dead by Patterson.

The horror behind them, Patterson directs the rest of the police on the scene as Amberson and Rhonda sneak away to the shower.
